During March, I participated in the group project 26 Blocks. The idea was to get 26 photographers and writers and randomly assign them a city block in downtown Phoenix. The creative pair was to take a month and show their interpretation of the block. I was given Block A. It is boarded by Roosevelt St, McKinley, 5th and 6th Ave. Tonight I attended the preview party for the gallery opening of the project at After Hours Gallery. Tomorrow, May 7th is the official opening on First Friday.
On this rare cloudy day, I think what I usually see out my window. My office window is on the 2nd floor and faces west. I’ve been taking photos out the window all year long. Most of them are sunset. Occationally I’ll see something a little different, like a rainbow.

I really like the view form my window. How’s your view?
We rushed to fill it and waited for more to stop by. While waiting, I grabbed my camera, a flash, light stand and set of pocket wizards. I looked around and found a favorable place to setup, threw on my 200 and sat in a chair at the other end of the patio.

Unfortunately no hummingbirds came back by to check out the full feeder. We did see several Sage Lizards. They didn’t really attack, but performed several push ups towards me to show off their guns.

Arielle and I decided to leave the fridge 75 degree weather in Phoenix in search for nicer 75 degree weather in sunny San Diego. So it’s not really any more sunny than Phoenix, but it is greener and the the city isn’t laid out in a grid, so I’m quite confused while trying to navigate.

We stopped at Desert View Tower in Jacumba, California. The tower was built sometime between 1922-28 as a dedication to the area’s pre-highway days. Now it’s a neat tourist trap.

After an hour of bouldering and looking for the springs we continued on. Our first stop was the beach. We lucked out and got there just in time for sunset. It was the first time I had seen the sunset on the Pacific. I could get used to seeing it more often.

I’ve been working on a new website and it just went live tonight. The main goals for the new site is to simplify the design, make the photos bigger, give it a consistent look with my blog and display my updated portfolio. Over the past couple months, I’ve spent a lot of time going back through all my photos from the past couple of years to build a new portfolio. My goal for the new portfolio was for it to not be a newspaper portfolio and for it to better represent who I am as a photographer. I feel this portfolio does both.

If you get a chance check it out and give me some feedback on the design and or the portfolio.

New Editorial Portfolio and Site

It seems wrong not to post a photo, so here’s one that I’ve been holding on to for a while.

We joke that our apartment complex is our own piece of Florida here in Phoenix.

A couple weeks ago Arielle and I went down to Tucson to hear Magnum photographer Elliot Erwitt speak at UA’s Center for Creative Photography. Erwitt mostly showed work from his book Personal Best.

“I studied photography by reading the instructions on the box of film. You don’t study photography you do it.” – Elliot Erwitt

Erwitt along with Alex Webb had photos on display at the Etherton Gallery. The show runs to March 22nd, so if you get a chance to see it, I would highly recommend it.

One thing Erwitt said was that he is a photographer by profession and he has a hobby of photography. It was rare when they interacted. I found it very interesting to see how he compartmentalized his commercial work from his personal work. He talked about how luck has a lot to do with great photos. Even when on assignment for a magazine he would take time to make photos that didn’t have to do with his assignment. So it confirmed what I believe, to take time to shoot for yourself no matter where you are or what assignment you’re on.

We showed up over an hour before things started so we used our time and the awesome light to have fun and take photos.

When I got in the alley, I saw this AZ Republic paper box sitting around from the trash cans. It seemed oddly placed, so I ran back inside to grab my camera.
