I got a call from an editor the evening of the Gabrielle Giffords shooting asking if I was available to godown to Tuscon the following day. I got up early the next morning and hit the road. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect as everyone was still trying to figure out the sequence of events and the motives behind the shooting. Through out the day, I went to the Hospital for the morning press conference, the Safeway where the shooting happened, the shooter’s parent’s house and ended the day at Congress Woman Giffords’ office.

While at Giffords’ office, I was completely blown away by the support of the community. There was a constant stream of people coming by to drop off notes, get well cards, lighting candles and praying. This was a very touching scene. It’s amazing and refreshing to see this kind of community support but sad that it was because of the tragic events. I spent more time talking to people than I did taking photos. Some supporters were dear friends of Congresswoman Giffords, some were strangers.

It took me a while to get my head around my thoughts, from this assignment.
